The iPhone packs a groundbreaking collection of features, many of which we think will have a lasting impact on cell phones to come (read our full story here). However, some of the iPhone's best feature are already here, on handsets that are available right now. Here's a collection of some of the best aspects of Apple's iPhone, along with some current phones that have similar functions.

1. Touch-sensitive controls

What the iPhone has: The iPhone has a 3.5-inch touch-sensitive screen that lets you use two fingers to navigate every function on the phone.

Nokia outfits San Francisco students with Internet gadgets

Nokia isn't waiting for a city-wide Wi-Fi network in San Francisco to get going before it gets involved in the city's broadband efforts. The company is donating a number of Wi-Fi enabled cell phones and Internet tablets to two San Francisco high schools to get students hooked on the mobile Internet.

The largest cell phone manufacturer in the world is donating N90 and N93 multimedia phones to about 20 students at Balboa and John O'Connell high schools. The students, all members of school multimedia programs, are also being equipped with 770 Internet tablets. The partnership between the city and Nokia is being formally announced today at a ceremony at O'Connell.

The new devices will take advantage of Wi-Fi hotspots that have been set up at the two schools in recent months by the city for this pilot project.

Great Deals Await Online Cell Phone Shoppers

It's no secret that the cell phone market has become an important part of the internet economy in recent years, as customers increasingly realize that they can save money by buying handsets and other consumer electronics over the internet.

One example of a totally internet-based discount cell phone store is Cellular-Blowout.com, which offers unlocked cell phones at deeply discounted prices to customers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Some of the site's most popular products include the Motorola KRZR, Motorola SLVR L7, and LG VX8500 Chocolate Phone, all of which are available at below-market prices, with no commitment or service agreement. Because they are unlocked, these phones can be used on any compatible wireless network, meaning that you are never locked in with a single service provider.

College policy kicks cell phones out of classrooms

SUPPLY, N.C. - Brunswick Community College professors who hear ringing or chirping during their classes now have a tool to stop the noise.

College trustees have enacted a new policy requiring students to turn off cell phones and refrain from text messaging during classes or face disciplinary action.

"This is one where we have overwhelming support from the faculty," college President Steve Greiner said before trustees voted unanimously Wednesday night to enact the new policy.

The policy states that cell phone use impedes the learning process and lists four rules:

Cell phone ringers must be turned off in classrooms, laboratories, the library or during any college-sponsored event on campus.

Phone calls may not take place during classes.

Cell Phones: Safety hang-up

We're disappointed that lawmakers aren't sending a strong message on cell phone use (without a hands-free headset) while driving. As new drivers, teens likely will be the only ones targeted with a new bill banning them from using cell phones while driving.

We won't argue with research showing that teen drivers are more easily distracted than adults while chatting behind the wheel. But we don't see that as an excuse to let grown-ups off the hook. Isn't this like saying adults are better at drunken driving than teens? If multitasking while driving is a bad idea, then it's a bad idea. Period.

While the number of teens talking on cells (and texting on them) is growing, it's hardly a problem that plagues only youths. A 2005 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that 6 percent of drivers age 25-69 use cell phones without headsets, and that 10 percent of drivers age 16-25 do the same.

760 area code is in high demand

The 760 area code, which stretches 400 miles from Escondido to national forestlands in Mono County, will run out of phone numbers within 2½ years unless it is split or overlaid with a new area code.

The association responsible for giving out phone numbers proposes either dividing the 760 area code into two areas – one that would keep the 760 designation and one that would be assigned a new code, 442 – or imposing an "overlay" in which new customers would be given the 442 area code.

John Manning, director of the North American Numbering Plan Administration, said increasing use of fax machines, cell phones and Voice-Over-Internet Protocol phone service has boosted demand for telephone numbers.
