Orange launches converged mobile and landline phone
We actaully stand a chance of decreasing the number of phones we use, if Orange have their way. They've launched Unique Phone, which works both as your mobile when you're away from home, and as a landline when you're in range of the Wifi network where you've installed your Orange Livebox. That means one bill, one handset and one number. The phone will automatically switch between networks without interupting the call, and it's currently compatable with the Motorola A910, Nokia 6136 and the Samsung P200. It's going to be available from November, although you can pre-register your interest here.

I was under the impression that it didn't do that.
LG Follows Carriers To iFollow
Instant Messaging specialist Followap has signed added another high profile customer to its list following the announcement that LG Mobile will use the company's IM solution in future handsets. With a customer list that already includes Vodafone, Microsoft's MSN, Hutchison's 3, Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola and more, Followap is making great strides in the mobile instant messaging (IM) and presence market. The latest to join the list is LG Mobile which has selected Followap's mobile IM iFollow Client to be integrated into its latest 3G handset the LG U300. The LG U300 is designed specifically for the IM user in mind, featuring the first ever IM key which means that with one click, users can access their personal MSN Messenger community, and interact with their family and friends on the go.
BenQ P51 Pocket PC phone was vaporware after all
The reason is trivial: BenQ, that previously has purchased Siemens Mobile division from Siemens, is firing all German employees and closing all facilities in Germany. What is the reason of closure? Obviously the market share of BenQ-Siemens mobile phones was falling rapidly and that was the reason. What was the reason of this fall of market share? On one hand one could suspect German workers, who take benefit of overly bureaucratic and too employer-hostile German social system, but we think that it was clearly mis-management on part of BenQ. Anyway: after Sierra Wireless, yet another (potential) vendor/maker of Windows Mobile phones goes away. All in all bad news for Windows Mobile camp! Information from BenQ follows. * * * * * BenQ Announces Discontinuation of Funding for its German BenQ Mobile Phone Subsidiary To stem unsustainable losses at BenQ's mobile operations, BenQ Corporation's board of directors convened today and resolved to discontinue capital injection into BenQ Mobile GmbH & Co OHG, its German mobile phone subsidiary.

Orange 'Unique Phone' service available in November
Orange has announced more details of its One Phone package that will allow people to have one handset that will switch between an Orange Wireless router connection and the Orange mobile network. Outline detail of the new service are on the Orange website here. Handsets for the new service are expected to be available from November 2006, with three handsets to choose from initially the Motorola A910, Nokia 6136 and the Samsung P200. Registration to be first in the line for handsets can be done at www.orange.co.uk/uniquephone. The service will not switch between the Livebox and mobile networks in the middle of a call, which to some extent may be preferable as if moving around your home it will avoid lots of switching pauses as the handset switches between networks.
Samsung's SGH-i600: an HSDPA and WiFi Smartphone at last
Sure, you like the Motorola Q but hate the fact that it's missing WiFi. And the lack of 3G on the HTC Excalibur is also a deal breaker. Well, look no further for your QWERTY fix brother, 'cause our favorite maker of boxy black devices is showing off their SGH-i600 Smartphone at IFA in Berlin. This tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900 baby brings it all: HSDPA, EDGE, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel cam with another up front for video calls, a 2.3-inch, 65k color, 320 x 240 TFT display, Microsoft's Push Mail, and 128MB ROM / 64MB RAM with MicroSD expansion all powered by Windows Mobile 5.0 Smartphone on a TI OMAP 1710 processor. The phone looks small enough for single-handed operation, can pull double-duty as an HSDPA modem and can even be switched into USB mass storage mode for easy drag-n-drop data transfer off your PC.
Xplore M98 could be a PalmOS best-seller mobile
ASIAN COMPANY GSPDA could turn its Xplore M98 PalmOS based smartphone into a best seller, if it tweaked the design a bit and invested in proper marketing and distribution in the West. Xplore M98 PalmOS smartphone with stylus and included 32MB Sandisk Micro-SD card I bought this Palm OS based smartphone because I love the simplicity of the traditional Palm OS Garnet, and the high availability of third party applications of all kinds, from good games to open source databases to "voice over IP" SIP applications. Another good selling point of the Xplore M98 is its "clamshell" format and 1.3MP camera, which actually looks more like a 640x480 CMOS sensor software -interpolated to 1.3MP, but which gives average quality images. Personally, I prefer a clamshell design over the more basic "candy bar" design and to my knowledge, the M98 is the only Palm OS based, GSM clamshell phone in the marketplace.

LEAKED: Motorola loves Linux - E690 PDA Phone
It looks like Motorola is making another non-RAZR, which in itself is exciting news. The E690 is a PDA/phone that runs on Linux, yes, Linux. It has standard PDA touchscreen and writing functions, as well as some decent multimedia support - including every video and audio file you could want played through two "3D surround" speakers (where you actually store the media, we don't really know). The phone also supports Bluetooth, WPA with full Internet browsing, and Office App viewing. But USB 1.1 only? That's like selling us a Cadillac without automatic windows. We know some of you Linux fans out there are probably writhing in Linux ecstasy. You can read more about Linux on mobile devices here.
