HP GPS PDAs - rx5700/5935 get v.3.2.2 firmware upgrade - "SN" off ...

After launching their first GPS enabled PDA in 2005 with the hw6515, and upgrading it in 2006 to the hw6915, HP went back to a more standard PDA design with the rx5700/5915 "Travel Companion" that we reviewed in this article. It has proved quite popular thanks to it's sleek format, long battery life, pre-loaded TomTom v6, but some users complained about the problematic "SN" setting that prevented pedestrian use. This has now been fixed in the sp34272/v3.2.2 upgrade made available by HP and some other settings have been changed as well. They are analyzed in detail in >> PAGE 2 of the article.

Updated June 9th, 2006 - HP is readying the hw6915, the first GPSPDAPhone with GPS, GSM (Edge data), Bluetooth and WiFi, but they are still improving the 6515 and the...

Can the iPAQ get its mojo back?

We're betting that your list included the BlackBerry at least once if not twice -- citing the conventional 8700 series and the more consumer-friendly 8800 Pearl, Palm's Treo, the Samsung BlackJack and/or Motorola Q.

There's an equally good chance that HP's iPAQ didn't rate a nod despite the brand having defined the potential "BlackBerry killer" category with the introduction of one of the first mobile e-mail handhelds -- the hw6500 Mobile Messenger series -- in mid-2005.

This exercise simply proves how much has changed in the past 18 months. HP has gone from straddling the twin mountaintops of brand and tech leadership to becoming just another player in the mobile device landscape.

"It is unfortunate that we have lost some share," said Chin Hong Cheng, Vice President of HP's Consumer Products and Mobile Business Group for the Asia-Pacific region, "but we are putting together a very strong strategy to regain our leadership."

Speaking with ZDNet Australia during the launch of HP's new desktops and laptops in South Korea last week, Cheng admitted that the market's greatest profit and potential was "not so much in the pen-based segment, the growth is in the 'messenger' and converged device space."

Cheng said that the company's strategy would revolve around "more than devices, it includes mobile device management, with a focus more on the commercial and business side and not on the consumer low-end phone devices."

That push was behind HP's acquisition of mobile device management specialist Bitfone in late December last year.

HP Adds iPAQ Smartphone, Joining Brand PDA Phones

Unlike HP's PDA phones, the new device adds voice commands to allow for hands-free operation. A "voice reply" feature lets users reply to e-mail by dictating a message and sending a voice response. Users also can listen to e-mail and text messages.

The Voice Messenger is the first iPAQ to offer the over-the-air device-management capabilities that let businesses remotely manage and support the device's performance, security and access to applications, data and networks. IT managers, for example, can remotely erase data on lost or misplaced devices, configure and repair units, and provide updates and security applications.

Digital entertainment features include music and video playback, games and a digital camera.

Last year at this time, HP introduced the quadband GSM/EDGEhw6900 PDA phone, then the industry's first to combine cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS navigation technology in one device, the company said.

Girl, 8, made more than 100 calls to 911

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - An 8-year-old girl used her mother's discarded cell phone to make more than 100 prank calls to 911, in some cases swearing or indicating there was a fire or someone was stabbed, a sheriff's deputy said Monday.

AT&T and Tracfone searched their records to assist the Sheboygan County sheriff's department in tracking the phone number to its owner over the weekend, Lt. Jim Risseeuw said Monday. The girl's parents were unaware of the calls, he said.

"She was swearing," Risseeuw said. "In some cases, she would initially state like there was a fire at the house or one case, someone had been stabbed, that type of thing. She would back off of that story and go into prankster-type behavior."

The girl, who identified herself as "Matthew" when she made the calls, won't be charged or referred to juvenile authorities because of her age, Risseeuw said.
