3GSM 2007 turns on Mobile TV

-Motorola Z8: 15mm HSDPA 'kick' slider, 2.2-inch display, 2.0 megapixels camera and video player capable of 30 frames per second.

-Nokia N77: 18.8mm W-CDMA candybar, 2.4-inch display, 2 megapixels camera and DVB-H broadcast TV receiver. -LG KU950: 18.9mm HSDPA rotator, 2.4-inch, 1.3 megapixels camera, and DVB-H broadcast TV receiver. -Samsung F510: 10.7mm HSDPA Dual Face candy bar (with self-standing swivel screen), 2.4-inch display, 2.0 megapixels camera, DVB-H Broadcast TV receiver, TV-output, and DivX codec support. Comments: Mobile TV is quiet a competitive space that global manufacturers target to differentiate. Operators' push on W-CDMA technology helped to develop new propositions such as Mobile TV or Music, and for the past 15 months Mobile TV standards are in the centre of the debates.

Mobile TV strives for good reception

Despite industry-wide scepticism that the technology will not take off, several manufacturers revealed DVB-H enabled devices in Barcelona, as Mobile TV takes centre stage at 3GSM.Nokia announced the N77, LG unveiled the KU950 and Samsung announced the F510 Ultra Movie device.Manufacturers are keen to push the technology, despite it receiving a luke warm reception so far in the UK. Last year, Virgin launched the Lobster 700TV, the first true TV phone, but sales figures and a price drop on the handset suggest that so far it has not sold as well as anticipated.Meanwhile, Bluestreak Technology is making its Java platform MachBlue Mobile available for J2ME-compatible mobile phones to access mobile TV.Bluestreak CEO Paul Forostowsky said: 'Bluestreak is already recognized as the leader in bringing rich-media content and services to mobile phones, and by adding J2ME support to our solution we are continuing to expand our competitive lead.

3GSM - LG targets big jump in European phone sales

LG Electronics Inc. has set an ambitious target of increasing cell phone shipments by 60 percent this year in the competitive European market, it said Monday.

The South Korean cell phone maker shipped 8.7 million handsets in Europe in 2006 and is targeting shipments of 14 million units this year. Much of its hopes are riding on the popularity of its new "Prada" design handset and "Shine" phone, which makes its European debut on Monday at the 3GSM trade show in Barcelona, Spain.

The Shine phone (KE970) was unveiled at CES in Las Vegas in January and is the successor to LG's hit "Chocolate" handset (KG800), while the Prada handset was developed with the Italian fashion house and sports a large touch-screen display like Apple Inc.'s upcoming iPhone.

At 3GSM the company will also unveil several new phones including the KU950, which combines WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) 3G with DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) digital television reception.
