Motorola MOTORIZR Z8 leans ahead of the curve

With its signature "fit-to-face" slide, the new RIZR Z8 promises HSDPA networking and high definition video streaming. Can it deliver?

Editor's Note: While we originally reported that no microSD cards were available in the 4GB capacity supported by the RIZR Z8, shortly after post time, SanDisk announced the imminent availability of high-capacity microSD cards.

Motorola today announced a unique new "kick slider," the MOTORIZR Z8. Opening with a gentle curve that leans toward the user's mouth, the new RIZR also features 3.6Mbps HSDPA networking. Over the 3G network, Motorola claims that users will be able to watch video at 30 frames per second on the 2.2-inch, 16-million color QVGA screen. The phone is an attractive successor to the Motorola RIZR Z6, a phone we previewed at CES 2007, but which has yet to be released.

3GSM 2007: Motorola RIZR Z8 announced

Just weeks after officially announcing the MOTORIZR Z6 at CES 2007, Motorola introduced today the MOTORIZR Z8, an upgraded version of the Z6. The main difference between the two is that the Z8 will be powered by Symbian.

The MOTORIZR Z8 comes equipped with a 2 megapixel camera with 8x zoom and LED light, video record and playback capabilities, 90MB of internal memory, microSD card slot for up to 4GB of memory, media player and A2DP AVRCP Bluetooth.

Both Z6 and Z8 are expected to be available in the first half of 2007. No info about the price yet.

Motorola Says Investor Icahn Is Seeking a Board Seat (Update6)

Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Carl Icahn, the billionaire shareholder activist, demanded a seat on the board of Motorola Inc., the mobile-phone maker whose profit margins have been battered by competition from low-priced handsets.

Motorola shares, which reached an 18-month low of $17.90 Jan. 12, rose 6.9 percent after the company reported Icahn's intention in a statement today. Icahn, 70, owns 1.4 percent of Motorola's stock, the phone maker said.

Earnings at Schaumburg, Illinois-based Motorola declined 48 percent last quarter amid competition from bigger rival Nokia Oyj in developing countries. The stock dropped 19 percent in the past year, a slump analysts said made it an attractive target for Icahn, who forced companies such as Time Warner Inc. and ImClone Systems Inc.

Motorola feeling the heat: Ron Garriques leaves for Dell

Ron Garriques, EVP and President of Motorola's Mobile Devices business announced his resignation on Friday last week, effective immediately. He will move to Dell to take the role of head of the Consumer Division. He will be replaced for now by two people - Ray Roman, senior vice president, global sales, and Terry Vega, senior vice president, global devices.

Comment: This departure comes off the back of two poor quarters for the Mobile Devices business caused by a lack of hero products in the portfolio to take up the running from the ageing RAZR.

We suspect that Q1 devices sales in Motorola are horrible and that the discussion between Ron Garriques and Ed Zander, CEO, was full and frank.

Ron Garriques has always been upbeat about the portfolio at Motorola. Even in a December 2006 investor presentation, he trailed some of the forthcoming devices and described them (as usual) as 'wickedly cool' and 'wow'.
