New Samsung Ultra Edition II U700, U600, U300 and U100 at 3GSM

Samsung announces new ultra thin mobile phones at the 3GSM 2007 in Barcelona. The new New Samsung Ultra Edition II line includes Ultra Edition 10.9 (U600), Ultra Edition 12.1 (U700), Ultra Edition 9.6 (U300) metallic clamshell and the candy bar handset Ultra Edition 5.9 (U100), which is supposedly now the World's Slimmest Mobile Phone.

All new Samsung Ultra Edition II phones feature Samsungs Optimized Power Usage Solution (OPUS), which is increasing talk time by 10%, power saving by 30% and battery capacity by 10%.

The Samsung U600 and U700 sliders coming in a choice of colors which includes sapphire blue, garnet red, platinum metal and copper gold. Features of the new slim sliders include 2.22" wide TFT LCD, 3.2MP camera and HSDPA 3.6 Mbps data transfer speed (U700 only).

Samsung came out in force at 3GSM and launched an array of new handsets, including a bunch of super-thin phones dubbed the Ultra Edition II range. These handsets looked like they've been run over by a steam roller but impressively manage to pack decent feature sets.

If you thought the D900, X820 and D830 were cool then you'll absolutely love the Ultra Edition II range. Interestingly, Samsung has done a deal with Yahoo so that you can access Yahoo search, IM and email using the U600, U300 and U100.

Keep in mind, however, that thin phones mean thin batteries, so the battery life might not be as good as on other models.

First in the super slim line-up is the Samsung U600 (pictured), a slider phone that measures 11mm thin and features EDGE and quad-band GSM connectivity, a 3.2-megapixel camera with auto-focus, stereo Bluetooth (A2DP), a document viewer, an MP3 player and an expandable microSD slot.

Samsung Ultra U300: The best clamshell ever

Quite simply one of the most stunning phones released this year the Samsung Ultra Edition 9.6 U300 is by far the best clamshell phone ever made.

With a metal case and 3 mega pixel camera as well as TV output, Bluetooth and 70MB onboard memory the U300 will be the biggest selling clamshell of 2007 in the UK.

It also includes a 2.2-inch LCD with 240x320 resolution and an external 96x16 OLED.

Expect the Samsung U300 to be released in the UK March 2007.

Samsung Ultra Edition II 9.6 Dons Full Metal Jacket

Cheap plastic phones seem to be a thing of the past, at least over in some parts of the Samsung camp. They've adopted a full metal casing for their latest ultra-slim clamshell, the Ultra Edition II 9.6. This ridiculously skinny flip phone "is encased entirely in metal", and my best guess has them selecting something lightweight like aluminum for the job. In terms of features, The Samsung U300, as it is also known, comes with all the stuff that you've come to expect from the Korean manufacturer, including a three megapixel camera, TV-out, Bluetooth (presumably stereo A2DP), and 70MB of internal memory. There's probably a microSD expansion slot too in this "world's slimmest folder." European availability is expected during Q1 2007.

Review: Samsung SGH-U300

Samsung's new Ultra Edition II range includes all standard form factors, and this fine example forms the folder-style entry. The Samsung Ultra 9.6 (SGH-U300) has a metallic design, looking rather different from its brothers in the series.

The SGH-U300 misses out on 3G data, but does sport GPRS/EDGE and tri-band GSM connectivity in addition to the on board Bluetooth with A2DP stereo headset support. The handset boasts a bright 2.2" internal display, and like all newer Samsung handsets, has a QVGA resolution. Shooting above its size, the SGH-U300 includes a 3.2 megapixel camera, which is a great addition. For storing all your media, the 9.6mm (0.4") thick Samsung SGH-U300 includes a microSD memory card slot.

While the Samsung SGH-U300 will be released in Europe during Q1 this year, specific carrier availability and pricing information has not been released so far.
